To find a Saw-whet in winter during the day, find some isolated conifers, then walk around them and look for "whitewash" and pellets on the ground. If you find that, look up. They may or may not be obvious. There's usually a trail of whitewash in the tree too. Follow that line up until it ends. And keep in mind they may have multiple roosts so even though you find the signs, they may not be there that day.

I haven't looked for them in western WA yet, and I imagine it isn't as easy as in eastern WA because we have a lot more roosting habitat on the west side. If you're on the east coast, they can often be found in cedar trees.

Of course, the easiest way is to keep an eye on the birding listservs and wait for someone to mention where they're at (the Saw-whet in this photo is in a location where they return year after year)...but keep in mind there will be a lot of birders looking for that bird, so be extra careful around those owls to keep from stressing them too much.

Oh, and Steve listened to Boston back in the day too, so maybe he could be into birding as well. Or not.

You really mean famous Steve Jones, awesome guitarist of the Sex Pistols (and now semi-respectable LA radio host) is a birder!? What! The only birds I remember him being interested in back in the '70's UK weren't the feathered variety...
